The first game of any new season is important not only to get the league challenge off to a good start but to bring together the team for the first time after summer training and friendlies into a competitive environment.
Director of Rugby Steve Pope will have been especially keen to see how youthful styled Cobham first XV, with a new Captain Olly Fox and over half the team making their first team debuts, would gel and he will have been delighted with the final result.
Some of the debutants had also featured in Cobham's Under 21 win mid week 44-34 against Richmond making it a great start to the season.
Cobham led London Cornish 15-6 at half time through a try from Jordan Bond and the second half fight back from London Cornish was hampered by two yellow cards in quick succession as they ran in three tries to get close but a further tries from Harry Green and Tom Farrelly plus penalties from the safe boot of Farrelly ensured success to the delight of the home supporters and of course captain Olly Fox.
Director of rugby Steve Pope said: "The first home games of the 2018 -19 season did not disappoint with the double header of 1st and 2nds at home to London Cornish. The weather and mood around the ground was warm and sunny.
"It is now common knowledge that the club is working towards a shift in culture and what we want the body of our sides to look like on a match day. I'm very pleased to say we had a great mix of experienced, established players and youth throughout both the sides with five of Wednesday night's under 21s involved for the first team.
"Many people seem to have questions over the make up of our squads, but we are looking to field those that train and involve as many of our students before they head off back to continue their studies. It was great to see how the positivity and energy of the playing group is bringing a new and very different feel to the club on and off of the field.
"As for the game itself... very close , we were good for the win but it was a closely contested fixture as always and with both sides far from full strength I can see the return fixture being a real bone crushing encounter. We played smart fast football against a big physical side.. and as our fitness and skill levels showed we were able to play in a manner which suited the conditions.
"LC are a good side and will cause most sides problems as they get there marquee players back. For us this was a very pleasing first performance.. full of heart drive and ambition, something we are going to need every week. Too many players to single out , the coaches are delighted for the debutants today..we hope we can build week by week and focus on our very individual brand of rugby.
"Not many sides in this league are looking to play the expensive football we are as a a club. Congratulations to all those making there debuts.. to the new leadership group... and the club captains... and our new members of the coaching team. Well done on a very positive start - on to next week and the trip to Chobham.
"Oh and of course our love to Courtney and family on the fantastic news of the birth of her baby boy.''
Cobham are away to their arch rivals and close namesakes Chobham next week who ran in strong winners against Hove 0-27.
