Message from Pete Newland:
'Tremendous shock to hear of Pete’s sudden death.
Pete was the only member of Braemar to be invited to join who was not either a member of Old Surbitonians or Cobham Rugby or had any connection therewith.
He was an Old Tiffinian through and through. He watched O.T’s whenever there was a game at ‘Grists’ and when there was no game, he would come to Cobham to have a beer with us and watch and support us.
A very sociable man, a big man and in all senses of the word a gentle giant, but on the field a tremendous competitor.
I played against him throughout the 60’s and he was one of the reasons why Old Surbs lost their unbeaten record in 1968 in that he had a stormer of a game.
He lived in Thames Ditton with his wife June who predeceased him about eighteen months ago and was never quite the same man afterwards.
A huge loss to Old Tiffs,as he was responsible for so much for them, a good communicator and organiser, who frequently carried a clipboard to remind him and to note down anything he thought worthwhile.
A huge loss to us all.'
