Playing at home, Cobham’s 2nd XV welcomed Teddington RFC on Saturday (1 February), who they had lost to earlier in the season 34-14. Teddington were placed above Cobham in the league going into this match.
Cobham only had a squad of 16 players, while Teddington had 18. However, in an extraordinary game of rugby, Cobham won 65-19 scoring nine tries. It was the second highest score in the league this season and Coach Matt Hawkes said after the game.
“So a game that looked like it may well be another tough fixture, as the away game saw Cobham blown away in a windy Bushy Park. What was to unravel was a masterclass in running rugby and defensive grit by a ragtag group of players that were expertly put together by Melts.”
After five minutes of hammering at the Teddington line, Cobham crashed over to score the first of their nine tries. This became the norm and it seemed that Cobham were scoring points every four minutes through the hand or from the boot.
What made the victory even more exciting was that Cobham played for over 50 minutes with 14 players; even more impressive was that the entire front five was made up of front row forwards.
A special mention to Cam Allenby and Hugh Kennedy for scoring their first senior tries for Cobham. Furthermore, Scott and Ben, who were making their, debuts literally took Teddington apart with power and speed, as well as a majestic boot that saw Ben score a penalty from the halfway line.
A fantastic day where the underdog fought hard to come out victorious.
